CCSS Professional Development PowerPoint
- This PowerPoint provides an overview of the purpose and structure of the CCSS and research that supports CCSS implementation.

Professional Development Guided for the CCSS - This document provides estimated times and a printable overview of the activities listed below.

Activity #1 (Slides 1-3) - Setting the Stage

Participants view the Turn, Turn, Turn  Video #3 and use the "Setting the Stage: Portrait of a Literate Individual" placemat to record their thinking.

Discuss and list examples of each student characteristic.

Materials

Activity #2 (Slides 4-13) -  Exploring the Structure of the CCSS

Participants work in teams to complete "A Treasure Hunt through the CCSS and the Appendices."

Activity #3 (Slides 14-20) - Appendix A: Research Supporting Key Elements of the Standards

Participants reflect upon a challenging class or subject studied in college and discuss what made the class or subject difficult? Debrief discussion.

Participants use Appendix A to complete a Guided Highlight Read on Paragraphs 1-4 (page 2, Appendix A).

Participants use the highlighted words to write a one-sentence summary on what they have just read.

Participants Jigsaw the following five sections:
- Foundational Skills (pp. 17-22)
- Writing (pp. 23-25)
- Speaking & Listening (pp. 26-27)
- Language (pp. 28-31)
- Vocabulary (pp. 32-35)

At each table, assign responsibility for reading sections. Each person identifies the three most important ideas from the section and records notes on the
"Jigsaw Graphic Organizer." Once completed, participants share their finds with the group.

Reflection: What are the implications of this information for curriculum, instruction, and assessment?
